Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Shengligou to the north of the Qitai County, Xinjiang. It was named by the Xinjiang Petroleum Administration in 1957, and was officially cited in the "Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region" in 1981.


Lithology and Thickness

Clastics. Interbedded yellow-green sandy siltstone and sandstone, intercalated with a small amount of carbonaceous siltstone. Its base consists of yellow-green conglomerate. Thickness is 161 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Jiangjumiao Fm

Upper contact

Disconformable contact with the overlying Huanglianggou Fm

Regional extent

Distributed on the northeastern margin of the Jungghariya Basin and in the area of the southern belt of the Karameili piedmont, with the rocks becoming coarser from west to east, and with the thickness of the formation getting the smallest in the area of the Shengligou area, but getting greater to both the eastern and western flanks of the basin, reaching as many as 1511 m.

Fossils

Plant fossils (phytolites) such as Callipteris cf. zeilleri, C. altaica, Cordaites sp., Calamites sp., Noeggerathiopsis sp. and Fascipteris cf. hallei; Bivalves such as Microdontella elliptica, M. cf. subovata, Mrasiella karamailia, Anthraconauta karamailia, Microdonta phothnikovskensis, etc.
